The ash beds are used in stratigraphy, as a correlation horizon. Ash layers can sometimes be directly dated, using K/Ar dating. The altered ash beds are often found interbedded with shallow marine limestones or shales. Bentonites are mined for fuller's earth, drilling mud, and bonding agents.
